Monthly Round-Up: January

The first month of 2020 is almost over! I can’t believe Christmas was already four weeks ago, and New Year’s three weeks ago. It simulatanously feels like both seconds and months have passed. Until, that is, I go into my living room and see the Christmas decorations in a pile by the stairs. One day I’ll put them away, I promise.

January has flown, but I did manage to get a few things in. Here’s a round-up of what I’ve done this month!

If you’ve read my September 2019 round-up, you’ll know that I LOVED the book on which season 1 of You was based. The same cannot be said for Hidden Bodies, the follow-up to that book. In fact, I shouldn’t really say I didn’t like it, since I have yet to finish it. It’s not a bad book. It’s an unnecessary one. You was so good, so unexpected and twisty that I really don’t think it needed a follow-up. Clearly the author disagreed, and the result is just too much. But the show version of You was such a hit that of course they were going to want to capitalize on it, and they drew from Hidden Bodies to do it. Thankfully, the second season is only loosely based on the book. And while I still don’t think it was necessary from a story point of view, I did enjoy the second season.

In the beginning of the month I talked about my goal to read 50 books in 2020. In January I selected a collection including historical fiction (one with a dual timeline), a women’s fiction novel and a contemporary romance. I’m currently working on the fourth book in the list, The Chaperone, and enjoying it. Check back in February, when I’ll list the next four books on my list, and talk about one of the books for my monthly review!

Winter is probably my favorite time of year for cooking. I love hot, hearty dishes. I prefer winter produce – squash, root vegetables – over anything a summer vegetable garden will produce. And I love, love my slow cooker. So far this month I’ve made BBQ pulled pork, chicken tikka masala, a huge batch of spaghetti sauce and meatballs, and several soups. Of everything I’ve made, I think my favorite has been split pea soup – and check back next week, when I’ll be posting my recipe!

That’s all for January! How have you spent the first month of 2020?
